ISM - International Safety Management
The International Safety Management Code (ISM)
The purpose of the ISM-Code is to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. The code is expressed in broad terms and is based on general principles and objectives.

The cornerstone of good safety management is commitment from the top and the development of an appropriate Safety Management System (SMS) as well as a thorough implementation of such a system.
The company should, inter alia, provide for safe practices in ship operation and a safe working environment. It should as well establish safeguards against all identified risks. A continuous improvement of safety management skills of personnel ashore and aboard ships, including preparing for emergencies, are further objectives.
The Safety Management System should ensure compliance with mandatory rules and regulations. It should also ensure that applicable codes, guidelines and standards recommended by the IMO, Administration, class societies and maritime organizations are taken into account.
