Provisional Medical Check-ups
Sailors, who sign on to work on German ocean-going vessels, need to prove that they have the physical prerequisites required established by the German Regulation on requirements for working on an ocean-going vessel (Verordnung über die Seediensttauglichkeit). These official check-ups are adminstered by authorised doctors in Germany and for the time being at six places abroad.
If an official formal check-up cannot be administered, a provisional medical check-up may, under exceptional circumstances, be administered by doctors who are not authorised by the Maritime Medical Service.
However, in such cases, a candidate must undergo a regular check-up administered by an authorised physician as soon as possible.
In order to administer a provisional check-up the Maritime Medical Service Unit has provided the English-language manual "Standards for the Qualification for Maritime Service in Germany" for doctors abroad. These standards sum up the necessary requirements of such a provisional check-up according to the German Regulation on requirements for working on an ocean-going vessel (Verordnung über die Seediensttauglichkeit). The provisional medical check-up, including an examination of vision, hearing and an x-ray examination of the lungs needs to be administered according to these "Standards".
Yet, the certificate provided by the doctor is not to be equated with the Seediensttauglichkeitszeugnis, the official certificate proving that a candidate is fit for working on an ocean-going vessel.
The following index, which is constantly updated, lists all those doctors based abroad who have already administered provisional check-ups. Only these doctors should be consulted to administer provisional check-ups.
