On service of the Marine Environmental Protection
The Ship Safety Division of BG Verkehr is the competent German authority for the implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment (MARPOL Convention) for German flagged ships as the authorized Flag State Administration and for foreign flag vessels as the German Port State Control Authority. Furthermore the Ship Safety Division is a notified body for the approval of life saving appliances, fire protection and marine pollution prevention equipment according the EU maritime equipment directive.
For the prosecution of marine pollution in the German territorial waters and for the issue of Oil Liability Certificates according to the International Bunker Convention 2001 and the Oil Pollution Liability Convention 1992 for ships under German flag the competent authority is the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
