DVD: Recovery systems - 2009
This DVD is the next instalment of a series started in 2006. The project of which it is part has two primary goals:
- Demonstration
of a newly developed rescue appliance (RLS – Rescue Star) for the rescue
of persons from the water, intended for professional use on container
ships and passenger vessels. The video shows a „man over board“ mock
rescue on an 8000 TEU-class container ship west of the Bay of Biscay in
heavy seas.
This reportage-style video visually presents the mode of operation and the use of new prototypes to rescue persons from the water including in heavy seas and on ships with high freeboards. It is meant to contribute to the creation of an international standard on such recovery systems on sea-going ships under the auspices of IMO (International Maritime Organisation). These recovery systems are to be provided in addition to existing rescue boats. In heavy and rough seas in particular, rescue boats are of very limited use: experience drawn from many rescue operations shows that rescue boats are not operated under these conditions because of the high risk to the boat crew. - The DVD is intended for training purposes as well. There are several didactic items included, e.g. resuscitation and emergency medical treatment as well as a non-exhaustive selection of other recovery systems / appliances for rescueing persons at sea that were developed in France, Norway and Germany.
