Safe Manning

Specifications: German and EU seafarers as masters/officers

According to the German Safe Manning Regulation, there is no hard and fast specified number of on board personnel depending on ship size or range of trade (no standard crew). However, certain positions on board must always be held by a citizen of Germany and/or the EU.

Here you can find the diagram (pdf-doc) of specifications according to German Safe Manning regulations (German and EU ship officers).

Exceptions through the "German Maritime Alliance"

The "German Maritime Alliance" ("Maritimes Bündnis") enables exceptions to the specifications for EU ship officers and ship mechanics if training slots are provided at the same time.

Here you can find the diagram (pdf-doc) of options for replacing EU ship officers and ship mechanics.

The availability of ship officers and ship mechanics at the German labour market is orientated on the bi-monthly updated statistics of the nautical placement agency Hamburg ("Zentrale Heuerstelle Hamburg"). You can find these statistics here.
